[Listen/Download] – Freedom Or Death

On their MySpace page Freedom Or Death so eloquently sum up the entire premise behind their motivation for making music.

Its the way I want to live my life
Having the freedom to make my own decisions and not adhere to the rules of others
To make art for my own well being, not for acceptance from the masses
To listen to what my heart beats to, not to slave for anothers
Give me the FREEDOM to make a life I choose – or hand me my DEATH

Free from the shackles of what society or the music industry expect in order to shift units, Torontonian duo Freedom Or Death (Steve Fernandez and Sway) have made an EP that scale the walls of dark and haunting electronic music, creating a modern-day Joy Division-esque atmosphere with Miike Snow beats and the bite of Handsome Furs. On songs like “Meter Maid” they manage to combine a slow acoustic guitar with 80s rainbow synths that sounds like Primal Scream circa 1992 meets Primal Scream circa 2008.

These guys know what they’re doing though and have a plan, having both been deeply embedded in the Canadian corporate music industry for a decade, they know what it takes to get as huge as they could, but that’s not what they want.  They’re making music because they love it and are releasing it on the very cheap (can you afford $5 for awesome music?).

They kindly allowed me to let you hear three songs below from their debut self-titled EP, which you can buy from iTunes for $5 (clicking that link opens iTunes).  Also watch their arctic video for “Crowded Room”.
