So as you have heard, Grimes has jumped ship and is releasing her new upcoming album with 4AD. To celebrate the new transition and give us all a little taste of what’s to come, Grimes released “Genesis”. Not that anyone was really worried about the new album lacking the true qualities of Grimes’ sound, but you all can rest easy. The new track is ethereal and refreshing. Excellent for a debut track.
The name fits the song perfectly and Clare Boucher‘s vocals are flawless. I’m about to throw down some old school CCD teachings (for those of you lucky enough not to have had to spend your Wednesday and Friday nights at Confraternity of Christian Doctrine class), bear with me.
When I first saw the name “Genesis” and listened to the track, it clicked in my head – or perhaps it was the nuns hitting me with their paddles (kidding, they don’t really do that). Aside from the Gospels, we had to read the book of Genesis from beginning to end. The reasoning was that the teachings in Genesis were the basis for the rest of the Bible.
So as I listened to the track I noticed that the early subdued techno beats served as the basis throughout the song – as the reoccurring theme, reforming as percussion notes, or sweet and layered vocals. The arpeggio piano stokes at the end kept in line with the character of the track’s beats from the very beginning – its genesis.
