There is something very intriguing about “If You’re Listening,” in that it first appears as merely a solid electronic track but then there is this explosive guitar work from the seventies that feels entirely held back but not quite estranged from the song which forces everything to feel as if it’s on the edge of panic.
The production is what I like most about this song. Rather than the usual layering of each instrument it sounds like you are standing in a hallway where in each room along it someone is playing a different instrument; Look, Stranger!‘s vocalist could possibly be relaxing in the bathroom, the keyboardist may be in a lounge chair looking out of the window sipping some of Pabst’s finest but the guitarist is definitely in a closet and for some reason as the song goes on he’s trying with more and more effort to kick his way out.
