I caught Hey Champ‘s remix of ‘ “Luther Vandross‘ “Sugar And Spice” over the weekend and have been steadily getting down on it ever since.
Normally when the colder weather hits I get all sorts of emo and dive into super emotional acoustic tracks, this year things have been different. Somewhere between Mayer Hawthorne blowing our minds with “How Do You Do” and enjoying the hell out of the new Ryan Gosling film “Drive” with it’s fittingly incredible synth-based soundtrack I’ve gotten into this electro-pop kick that I just can’t shake.
Hey Champ have caught my attention a few times in 2011 and are slowly getting close to RAC level appreciation. I think what satisfies me the most with them is how whenever they edit a song it’s done minimally. Take “Sugar and Spice” as a perfect example of how the songs original integrity is never in question, things aren’t clouded with noise, Hey Champ are quiet about their involvement whereas most often remixes just sound like some asshole with a new Casio and some free online recording equipment pushing buttons and screaming “hey, look at me!”
Simply put these guys are an ideal example of how to superimpose a remix rather than beat the thing into submission (no pun intended) which when it comes to Vandross is all that is needed.
