It’s getting cold in Scotland. Between the August Fringe and New Year’s Hogmanay the best thing to do is probably hole yourself up in a quaint little tavern (log fire necessary) and enjoy a few ales (it’s too cold for lager, don’t be daft) and hope your local talent will amount to something as effortlessly easy as Meursault.
As much as I love the folktronic marvellousness of ‘Pissing on Bonfires – Kissing with Tongues’ and new effort ‘All Creatures Will Make Merry’ it’s getting to that time of the year where I just want to drift away with 2009 EP ‘Nothing Broke’. It sounds like it’s been recorded with the simplest of goals; capture a mood. I imagine band leader Neil Pennycock sitting on a hill somewhere, guitar in hand, just singing away, being slowly surrounded by a few handclaps and some harmonising backing whoa’s . It’s a meagre offering, barely whetting the appetite, but still conveying a cautious optimism that is just too infectious. It’s cold, it’s Scottish, it’s undeniably folk, and it makes me wish I could hibernate, at least for a little while.
You should totally buy this stuff; my flatmate is dedicated enough to have bought the albums/EP’s and they come with lovely little personalised postcards/album art.
