[Listen/Download] – New Album By COOLRUNNINGS – “Dracula Is Only The Beginning”

Dear Mr Cool and Mrs Runnings;  Why would you make us wait so so long for such an excellent excellent album?

Oh, that’s how long “excellent” takes to gestate?  Gotcha.  Well guys, I’m just glad you unleashed this beast.  For those of you who may be about to listen to your first piece of COOLRUNNINGS music, allow me to reintroduce themselves (holla, Jay-Z).  The (then) seven-piece from Knoxville, Tennessee have been releasing EPs for more than a year now, each one as eclectic, varied, and soul-crushing as its predecessor.

When I introduced them back in May 2010 my description of them prompted band member Brandon to tell me “it was probably the best description of the band I’ve read. Thanks!  Awesome blog!”.  Now if you disregard that last part (he obviously didn’t know what he was talking about), that’s a pretty sweet nod.  Well now that their debut full-length is out, it follows up on their previous EPs “Buffalo” and “Babes Forever” in that it’s wildly eclectic and filled with ten shades of spectacularly layered and intricate tunes.  ”Chorus”, the opener, for example starts off sounding like Mungo Jerry’s “In The Summertime”, quickly extinguished for a less-polished Local Natives vibe.

Six songs later and you’ve pretty much gone through most of the sounds that anyone has ever heard, or that’s been made.  I’m not even lying; this album has every sound ever made on it.  You know that noise your throat makes when it clicks and you can’t get rid of it unless you fill it with breadsticks?  Yup, it’s on here. The sound of an antelope scratching its back against a tree?  You betcha!
