I’ve been itching for more from Bad Passion since we first featured them back in July. That feature was on the basis of just one track, “Rockin’ Your Beats”, but their new EP “Doin’ It Slow” confirms for any doubters that Alt and Lesley have something quite special going on here. It follows very much in the same footsteps, mixing fairly R&B-esque lyrics with altogether more minimal electronica arrangements (they themselves describe it as dream-pop meets R&B).
It’s a formula that runs the risk of being a gimmick, à la Ben Folds‘ cover of “Bitches Ain’t Shit“ (I’m going to throw my hands up and admit that I quite enjoyed it), but by not pushing it too hard the duo pull it off without becoming ridiculous. “Rockin’ Your Beats” was excellent, but they’ve actually bettered it with “Liquid Fire” – it’s not as lyrically hard-hitting as The Weeknd‘s “Wicked Games”, but it’s every bit as spacious and engrossing.
What with the Powers release it’s certainly been a busy week for Lesley, but I certainly hope she finds the time for more dabbling with Mr Altman. You can download the whole album for free over on their website (donations welcome, and well-deserved), or stream a couple of highlights below.
