[Listen/Download] – New EP By Powers – “Powers EP”

We’ve mentioned Powers a couple of times before – we featured their video for “Second Summer” back in August, and singer Lesley also moonlights with Bad Passion. Now the Toronto-based noiserocktronigazers (sure, I just made that genre up) have delivered their self-titled debut EP – and better yet, they’re giving the whole thing away for free over on their Soundcloud.

Wait, what’s that over there? Is it a gift horse? Then why are you looking at its mouth?

“Second Summer” was an infectious, upbeat treat; the EP, though, covers an impressive amount of ground for a four-tracker. “Last Year” is for the first half a broody, slower number that put me in mind of Big Black Delta, before abruptly switching to double-time majors for the second half and ending with lone, hanging vocal notes. “Sleeping Patterns” – my favourite of the bunch – shows off the rock edge to their sound; “Tom Thomson” rounds things off in epic (>7 minutes…), anthemic style.

All in all, it’s a solid effort that suggests Powers comfortably have the breadth to deliver a varied, engrossing album. Which I cordially invite them to do ASAP. You can download the whole shebang below.
