[Listen/Download] – New Song By Beach Fossils – “Out In The Way”

On February 22nd, Beach Fossils will unleash a new EP via Captured Tracks. What a pleasure. Ironically, the EP is entitled “What A Pleasure”, and will feature a collaboration with Jack Tatum, better known as Wild Nothing and the track, “Out In The Way,” features a bolder sound than anything we’ve previously heard from Beach Fossils. For those familiar with Beach Fossils’ laconic guitar lines and understated vocals, though, do not fret – Beach Fossils’ signature sound remains largely intact, just more fully developed. It is unclear whether that is a result of Wild Nothing’s welcome synths or from Beach Fossils’ own maturation process.  I suppose the rest of “What A Pleasure” will answer that question.

In the meantime, “Out in the Way” serves as a welcome re-introduction to a band that many wrote off as simply another lo-fi, summertime fling. The track reveals that Beach Fossils are aware of the inevitable shortcomings of their sparse sound and are willing to evolve. Still, they know their strengths and do not bury them beneath Wild Nothing’s sound; instead, this is the rare collaboration that truly seems to propel an artist to the next level. And just like that summertime fling, you will find “Out in the Way” repeating in your head, a distant vestige of warmth as we close out winter.
