[Listen/Download] – New Song By Cold War Kids – “Royal Blue”

To me, Cold War Kids are a band who hold an untold amount of potential and are just out of reach of ever fulfilling it.

Their debut album “Robbers & Cowards” was one of the better albums of 2006; catchy, upbeat, joyous, melodic and 17 different flavours (yeah, I spell flavours properly) of repeatable, with lead-singer Nathan Willett’s voice drawing the headlines on every song.  With their second album “Loyalty To Loyalty”, whilst apparently most people preferred it over their debut, personally I thought they dropped the ball a bit, with some of the songs not quite having the same panache as those on the debut.

With this new song, the first from their upcoming third album “Mine Is Yours” out on January 24th 2011, they’re kinda taking a different turn.  The first thing that I noticed was that it’s got a tight, groovy Paul Simon-esque bassline, and also hints (very slimly) at a tropical, sun-filled beach band, so maybe this will be where they finally fulfill all of that untapped potential.  I can see them getting down to this song on a beach in their shorts, exchanging drums for Steelpans.  But that could just be me; I have been snorting a lot of Chamomile tea lately so my views on the world are slightly skewed.
