I showed up a couple of years late to the Handsome Furs party, discovering them somehow back in 2009 around the time that their second album “Face Control” was being released, and for me, as a first time listener, I had it repeating on a daily basis for weeks.
Consisting of Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade and Atlas Strategic, and his short-story-writing wife, Alexei Perry, the Canadian duo made one of the best albums of 2009; A highly-charged, soul-thumping, Electronic, Spasm-Rock “happening”, the spikes and jolts struck every jiggly limb on my body and ignited fire in my veins, and to this day it still ranks up there as one of the few albums that I can listen to from front to back without having the urge to skip a track.
The new song “What About Us” is taken from their upcoming (but somehow already leaked) album “Sound Kapital”, released via Sub Pop on June 28th and was apparently all written on keyboard, and the lead track shows it in spades. I’ve never been a Wolf Parade fan, but I could listen to Handsome Furs all day, and whilst “What About Us” lacks a certain bite found on songs from “Face Control”, maybe it’s part of a more-electronic-but-less-in-your-face direction.
