[Listen/Download] – New Song By The Decemberists – “Down By The Water”

Unleashed on the world yesterday afternoon without a word of warning, at first glance I thought it was a cover of The Drums’ song of the same name, but on first listen I was both pleasantly surprised and mildly disappointed.

Surprised that it wasn’t a cover, and disappointed because it’s not that great of a song.  It’s taken from their just-announced upcoming album “The King Is Dead”, released on January 18th  via Capitol.  You know what that means right? It means that by this time next year everyone will have forgotten about it, unless it’s fucking magical.  Apparently Peter Buck from R.E.M. has been laying down some guitars for the album and you can definitely hear it in this song.  Typical Decemberists with a hint of R.E.M. and a tinge of Phil Collins too.  Doesn’t sound like a very good combo does it?

Meh. Not a good start.
