OK time for some interaction folks. I want to know songs that you fell in love with on the first listen. Here’s a few of mine, in no particular order: “Climbing To The Moon” – Eels, “Daughters Of The Soho Riots” – The National, ”Clubbed To Death” – Rob Dougan, “Invincible” – Muse, “Anyone Else But You” – The Moldy Peaches.
Today I added another one to the list with this track, “Dig Down Deep” by Vandaveer. It’s the title track off their 3rd album and as soon as it started I knew that this would be joining the list above. The duo, Mark Charles Heidinger and Rose Guerin, have produced a beautiful collection of torch ballads and arboreal indie folk (what’s not to like about a description like that?) and “Dig Down Deep” is a perfect taster for the album, giving you some idea of the sounds that they have in store for you.
The haunting open strains herald Heidinger’s vocals, sounding a little like Bob Dylan, backed by Guerin in a beautiful harmony. A strident song with a delightful sing-along chant this is one of those songs that can be played over and over and sounds better on every play. They’re currently touring in California and I’d recommend you catching them while you can.
As an added bonus if you like the band on their Facebook page you’ll get a free, unreleased track from them called “Kicked to the Curb”.
