Back in 2007 there were a multitude of artists being discovered and quickly snapped up by record labels via YouTube. These artists would record their own jams or covers and then post them to the site, many of which were fucking horrendous but one of the ones who made it out that actually had talent was Zee Avi, a Malaysian singer-songwriter with a slant for the infectiously relaxing.
The mix between her airy vocals, child-like exuberance, light and upbeat sound, and the fact that you can hear her singing with a smile on her face is endlessly listenable. My first introduction to her music wasn’t through YouTube though, it was hearing her cover of “First Of The Gang To Die”, a track from Morrissey‘s 2004 album “You Are The Quarry”, and from there I went back and listened to what I could of hers which just so happened to be a debut album, one that’s definitely got a Jack Johnson feel to it. Perhaps that’s not too surprising considering she’s signed to the label he co-owns, Brushfire Records.
She’s amping up for the release of her second album “Ghostbird” and has pimped out not one but two new tunes in the last couple of weeks. So here’s what you do; you open the curtains, then you open the blinds, then you unlock your windows, then you open all of your windows, then you play “Swell Window” (below) a few times and try to wipe that slight smile off your face. Even if it smells like fried food or like The Jolly Green Giant took a giant shit on your street and didn’t wipe his ass, you open those windows, and you enjoy this song. Gotitkthxbai.
