[Listen/Download] – Porcelain Raft – “Tip of Your Tongue” (Keep Shelly In Athens Remix)

Late last week, Frank posted about Porcelain Raft’s cover of “The Wall” by Yuck, as well as Yuck’s reciprocal cover of “Despite Everything” by Porcelain Raft.  Today, we have a new re-working of a Porcelain Raft song via Keep Shelly In Athens’ remix of “Tip of Your Tongue.”  The most notable change made by Keep Shelly In Athens is that this remix sounds absolutely nothing like the original.  Gone is Porcelain Raft’s grating pronunciation of “tip” (a welcome change).  Gone are the distinctive guitar tones.  Gone is any sense of subtlety.

Keep Shelly In Athens instead chooses to open the track with a Middle-Eastern chant, immediately obliterating any semblance to Porcelain Raft’s sound.  The track quickly morphs into a landscape of choppy vocals, processed strings, and skittering snares.  Keep Shelly In Athens effectively turns “Tip of Your Tongue” into a James Bond chase theme.  It all sounds great, but it comes at the expense of the intimacy of Porcelain Raft’s original.

In the end, Porcelain Raft and Keep Shelly In Athens crafted two disparate tracks, each suited for its own time and place.  It is a testament to both artists that both tracks succeed.  You can grab this remix, along with three others, from Acephale Records, here.

Also, be sure to check out Keep Shelly In Athens’ latest 12″, “In Love With Dusk,” out on Forest Family Records.
