I came across this EP from 2008 just recently whilst having a treasure hunt through various Kelpe mixes – he used the song “The Look”, which, for me, instantly stood out amongst giants. I think the song and album in general is so utterly cool, from the sound to the samples and even to the accompanying images found on the artist’s tumblr and flickr.
Essentially it’s classic vintage samples mixed with heavy beats and a modern sound, the one and only Billie Holiday is featured on “Tell A Lie” and it goes perfectly. The other standout is the end song “Pianomouth” which is a combination of distant yet powerful vocals, a grainy organ, and a steady, soulful beat. It’s a thing of distorted beauty.
