As I’ve said before, one of the bands I am most excited to hear more from this year is SolarSolar. Their album doesn’t drop until February, but they’ve generously sated my thirst in the meantime with a rather lovely little cover of the also-brilliant Wild Beasts‘ “Albatross”.
It’s something of a match made in heaven: both bands have a knack for deceptively minimal layering in their arrangements, albeit the one approaching from a rock background and the other from electronica. Wisely, SolarSolar don’t depart too significantly from the original, instead just letting their own production style do the work. Angela’s sultry vocals make a nice counterpoint to Hayden Thorpe’s own crystalline falsetto, giving the cover a sensuality that the stark original never really hints at.
I’m not saying this is a perfect substitute for original material, but hey: it’s an excellent cover of an excellent song. I can’t complain. You can download it below, and make sure to watch for that album when it arrives…
