I still remember when I first discovered Bob Dylan, and I think I might’ve spoken about it before but in case you missed it, I’ll tell it again (it’s incredibly exciting!).
I used to watch VH1 Classic religiously when I was a kid, all hours of the night and I’d be enthralled by all of these amazing old live performances from people I’d never seen before, like Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” at Knebworth in 1976, or The Beatles’ “Ticket To Ride” on Top Of The Pops (watch Ringo’s take-the-piss drumming), or my first introduction to Bob Dylan, his live performance of “Tangled Up In Blue” with face painted white and his piercing blue eyes only intermittently visible under the shadow of his hat.
It wasn’t his appearance that caught my attention but the lyrics and how he could so easily tell a story, drag it out for 17 minutes and catch your attention, listening to find out what happened next. So I went out to my favourite record shop (Avalanche in Edinburgh) and bought his Best Of Volume 1 CD, took it home and laid on my bed listening to it, completely blown away by every single song. That night I had a friend come over who wasn’t into that kinda music at all, but I insisted he listened to what I’d discovered before we went out to play football, I just had to share it with someone and I didn’t care if they liked it or not.
Since then as I’ve listened to more and more of his albums I’ve become even more drawn into his weaving storytelling, making his way up my list of all time heroes, and now sitting in the top three. Taken from his 1965 album “Bringing It All Back Home” and sitting a couple of songs after “Maggie’s Farm” and a couple before “Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream” is “Outlaw Blues”, here reworked by one of my favourite bands of the last year and a half The Morning Benders. Their version though is a crawling and light take on Dylan’s quicker-paced Rockabilly-esque tale and you can check it out below (which was taken from a 2010 tribute to “Bringing It All Back Home”), as well as an iTunes session of “I Was Wrong” (Nico Version).
