Ontario’s The Soirée dropped their “Marathons” EP last month, it is a must have for anyone who likes solid free music. “Animals,” the first single from it brings about a new pop sensibility to a band that previously seemed to have more focus on indie hooks and acoustic integrity.
This song reminds me immensely of David Bazan and at the same time it’s very Jukebox The Ghostish with a little Modest Mouse tossed in for good measure, which may seem like an odd mixture but they pull it off rather well.
The piano carries the rhythm from the very first note and yet with the foot tapping air to the song there’s still a constant shift in rhythm between the keys and the lead that allows the song to come across much less confined keeping it from ever feeling monotonous.
“Marathons” is a nice transition from 2008′s “Minor Details” which in it’s own right was a a great acoustic leaning album. It’ nice though for a band not to over-sell a specific sound by overshadowing and recreating something that we enjoyed in a large part because of the initial uniqueness.
“Animals” showcases a band that feels not only much more confident and comfortable in their roles within the band but confident and comfortable with the instruments themselves. This isn’t exactly a novel or new concept but it is a nice little side-note when talking about a band I continue to appreciate more and more.
