Washed Out‘s album opener “Eyes Be Closed” is just as lusciously moist as their debut tracks from two years ago… yet Ernest Greene ‘s waited two years to attack that tricky first album hype. He’s been biding his time and he’s definitely found his moment, the first full LP “Within And Without” releases July 12th, right in the middle of summer’s sweltering heat. Yeah, you and I both know he’s had that release date planned out.
“Eyes Be Closed” drifts about as you’d expect until a minute and change from the end. Held notes shared between strings and vocals overtake the track, drums thumping down until the song envelops us all with a cacophony of rainforest plants and animals.
It’s a shame the upload is low quality, Ernest Greene deserves a grander return to his chillwave throne, and this genre is really all about atmosphere. It’s good to see the band inching chillwave out from woozy stagnancy into grander territory…summer epics like this will merge well with the obviously intended steamy make-out sessions.
