The concept of one guy doing an entire album himself, recording it in his bedroom and playing every instrument, is a far cry from being new or groundbreaking, still I’m blown away by Trevor Powers and his ability to shape his songs so dynamically. Although Powers may not care to impress anyone, “Cannons” is fully charged with the desire to prove himself.
As this song develops there’s a definite presence that indicates how much he had to hold himself back with the instrumentation. Each note fits deliberately and works so well together, then right when it all comes close to fruition everything feels pulled back, reigned in, which draws focus once more to the vocals that are the backbone of magnetism in this track.
The fact that this kid is coming out of Idaho has not escaped me. It makes about as much sense as Conor Oberst coming from Omaha. The greatest art ever created didn’t come from a “scene,” it’s always risen from the most obscure and unexpected places. People put far more weight than it’s worth on where a band has come from; “here’s a new band from Brooklyn,” “check this song out from the latest group of guys from Portland.” How often do we hear statements like that? What seems to be overlooked is how those “scenes” themselves were created in the first place, pay attention because Youth Lagoon are good enough to put Boise on the map.
