[Listen/Rolling Stone's Top 500] – #176 – Funkadelic – “One Nation Under a Groove”

During the time when this album came out in 1978, ringleader George Clinton created something that was so far away from the mainstream black pop that was present in the day. But no matter how weird it was, it was the first album from the band that made more than a million sales. That meant that people did dig the guitar-heavy, sample filled, scatological soul tracks that they cooked up. They called it “A musical bowel movement/Designed to rid you of moral diarrhea.”

It took me a few listens before I could say it was anything more than plain weird. When I dove into it further, it is musical and lyrical genius that is full of wonderful imagery and metaphors. The album’s general themes are basically about breaking political, social and musical barriers with tons of song references into how the “groove” of music is like a God.
