An opening track called “We Will Never Be Discovered” is just asking to be discovered. How very clever of The City And Horses. Though, the quirky, catchy tune is hard to ignore – think Architecture In Helsinki meets Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros, combining quirky and poppy melodies with a folksy twist and a flute. Paper Garden Records discovered a little gem in The City And Horses – who could probably form their own mini city alone, given the number of musicians included.
The City And Horses seem to shine in the shadows of obscurity, clinging to the definition of what it means to be really “indie”. Sorry to burst their bubble, but they’ve already been discovered by a number of music blogs and I’m happy to have LBYB join the ranks. Their music is amazingly identifiable – by that I mean, their music gives the listener a clear idea as to who The City and Horses is. There is something relatable to their music.
The fearless leader of this city is named Marc (no stated last name) – a children’s television producer, which may explain the band’s fun and youthful sound. The musicality alone is something to admire, combining flutes, clarinets, guitars, harmonicas, drums, a Ukulele and a cello. And it sounds good!
