[Listen/Rolling Stone's Top 500] – #222 – Pixies – Doolittle

So here’s a new feature that myself and Tiana from RideTheTempo are going to be doing. Every week, or however often she sees fit to (maybe more, maybe less), she’s going to go through Rolling Stone’s top 500 albums of all time list, in no particular order.  She’ll have the cover art, a short write-up about the album, its place on Rolling Stone’s list, and best of all, a stream to listen to the whole thing.

So without further ado, I present to you the first in many, Top 500 Albums.

Hello all! I am Tiana from Ride the Tempo here to help you rediscover old music by bringing you the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Come with me for a ride back in time!

“Doolittle” was the third album release by Pixies, a band that Nirvana frontman Kurt Kobain loved so much that he said the soft/loud dynamic powered his album “Nevermind”. “Dolittle” was not a commercial success in when it first came out. It was one of those things that got popular through buzz and word of mouth (back then there was no such thing is twitter or google buzz) so it took a while. In 1989 if you cared about rock noise, it was essential that you heard this album. I think that this statement still holds merit.

Despite the praise it gets, Doolittle is by far the most underrated, underappreciated, and unheard album of all time. It’s my opinion that Doolittle is the album that changed rock music for years to come … especially ‘alternative rock’. I can still recall the days of blasting this cassette tape (for the younger generation, google it. lol) out on the car stereo while cruising around with friends. That was back in the day when we could afford gas to just cruise. When cd’s came around, it was the very first cd i bought. I still kept the cassette just for the good times it gave me. It had everything. It was sometimes loud and sometimes quiet. It was sometimes happy and sometimes somber. The lyrics conjure up all sorts of images and they have stuck with me for years. Of course, then along came Nirvana and the grunge movement along with Green Day and pop-punk. But I never forgot the root of it all. Sure some will say Husker du or The Smiths or some other band started it all. But none of them had an album with the appeal and genius of Doolitle. To me, it is the best album of all time and will forever remain that way.
