When M.I.A.’s new song “Born Free” leaked last week nobody was expecting to hear what they heard. The punk-rock rabble was a complete change in direction from anyone expected, or from what she’s done previously, even her video-only song “There’s Space For Ol-Dat-I See (Space Odyssey)”.
Now the video that accompanies “Born Free” was not expected either. It’s most definitely a social commentary piece that conjures images of the holocaust, racial segregation, or any kind of systemic genocide you may have witnessed or heard about in the last 150 years. It’s pretty brutal, with kids being shot and blown up, “innocent” people being beaten and people having dirty half-naked sex.
Check it out below and grab the MP3 of the song whilst you’re waiting.
