One of TV on the Radio‘s band members, Gerard Smith, died from cancer in April of this year. He passed away nine days (!) after the release of their latest album, Nine Types of Light. You won’t see him in this video of course, but TVOTR’s latest visual supplement is proof that they are still having loads of fun making music.
It begins with a loosely directed scene where the band are chatting amongst themselves at a diner. The rest of the 9-minute film shows lead singer Tunde Adebimpe dancing around the city and the beach dressed like Prince in Purple Rain, except he’s “The Artist Formerly Known As Tunde”. We see him pushing an empty stroller, gazing wistfully at TVOTR’s cover on Spin Magazine, and shirtless at the laundromat washing his Purple Rain digs.
It’s strange, and that is why you should watch it.
