This seems to happen, and has happened, with a lot of other music sites and blogs, whereby they post about a new artist who’s trying to get some coverage of their music and over the course of a year or so they watch that artist blossom and grow and get the kind of acclaim and recognition they deserve.
My first of this kind is We Are Trees, the brainchild of James Nee out of his bedroom in Virgina Beach in Virginia Land. Since I first posted about him I’ve listened to his beautifully-crafted EP “Boyfriend” countless times and it was easily the best EP of 2010, and the vinyl was even better, further enhancing the listening experience (and the way the vinyl was packaged was excellent, the pic above is an insert/poster with the vinyl). I’ve pimped him and shared his music like I was pimping out my cat.
New music from James is forthcoming via an EP (“Girlfriend”) that’s hopefully not long out, but back in October they played New York’s CMJ festival where allegedly he bit the head of a squirrel and spat its blood into the onlooking crowd before doing a modern-day Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival by plugging in his guitar and telling everyone to go fuck themselves.
None of that actually happened, but what did was they recorded this little “takeaway” session for the dudes at High/Low on a Brooklyn rooftop, playing “Sunrise Sunset” the EP’s breakaway song. It’s gorgeous, you’ll see.
