[Watch/Listen] – The Flaming Lips & Lightning Bolt – “I Wanna Get High But I Don’t Want Brain Damage”

The Flaming Lips have really been branching out after their last album, “Embryonic”, collaborating with artists like Neon Indian and Prefuse 73. It’s all been very exciting to Flaming Lips fans such as myself. In fact, it’s hard to think of anything The Flaming Lips have been involved with that wasn’t exciting and/or slightly alarming, such as that “Dark Side of the Moon” remake with folks like Peaches and Black Flag’s Henry Rollins.

No deviation from the exciting and alarming theme here, except for Wayne Coyne talking about stuff for the first 1:20 of the video. The footage was altered to have little glitches as he spoke on an upcoming appearance at Boston’s Newbury Comics on July 26th. After that, you see more of Coyne’s face, along with a few other images, in a highly stimulating psychedelic visual barrage that accompanies the song.

The song’s only lyrics consist of the title, suggesting that whoever wrote them has already suffered a significant deal of brain damage. It goes between a hard-driven rock sketch and a couple of hard-driven synthy interludes. It’s good to know that The Flaming Lips aren’t done being the coolest, most outrageous hippies in indie rock.
