[Introducing] – We Are Pirates
We Are Pirates couple a dreamy, retro synth sound with an up-to-the-minute youthful attitude that’s totally infectious.

We Are Pirates couple a dreamy, retro synth sound with an up-to-the-minute youthful attitude that’s totally infectious.

Electric guitar, trenchant bass-line , female vocals, synthesizers and a bit of reverberation. Blonds are a Treasure Coast, Florida, dream-pop duo influenced by – and I’m quoting them – old movies, old clothes and old people.

The Morning Clouds’s Josh Wambeke makes songs that are as lush and teenage dreamy as Beach House, as pop and sunny as a lazy Beach Boys single, with the ability to lose themselves in the influence of Nirvana and My Blood Valentine.

Carrousel’s tracks sit somewhere between whimsy and wistfulness, and are pitched perfectly to bring out the excellent vocals. The swooping verse melody of “14″ is especially good; one of the best I’ve heard in a while.

Lemolo’s music is anything but wild and untamed, a gentle brand of synth-pop that shimmers with sincerity.

TweetShare Brooklyn’s Young Yeller is the solo project of trained classical percussionist Jesse Brickel. His debut EP “Make Me” (released September 7th) displays a sophisticated soundscape conjuring soaring heart-on-your-sleeve prog pop one minute, the next getting back to basics with ambient get-up-and-dance joy. Young Yeller excels at crafting epic bedroom dream pop. “Make Me” rests [...]

TweetShare Architecture, a three – piece band based in Chicago, specialize in crafting an organic-electronic sound that merges ’60s girl-group stylings with an ambient mixture of dream pop. Their self-released debut album, “When We Were Young” (April 9th), is sure to make fans of Au Revoir Simone and Slumber Party rejoice! Originally a two-piece made [...]

TweetShare Chicago, Boston, Europe … You could be forgiven for thinking that Netherlands might be, you know, Dutch. They’re not, though. They’re roughly as Dutch as I am – in name only. Did you know the name Rutherford was originally Dutch? Did you care? Anyway, the point is that Netherlands are from Southampton, are now based [...]

TweetShare Don’t judge a book by its cover. It’s a good life lesson, that – however clichéd it might be. It’s worth bearing in mind when you first encounter My Plastic Sun. Sure, their EP cover might feature a bunch of awkwardly posed Barbie dolls, but Aqua they are not. As it happens, I have [...]

TweetShare This post is a “QuickPick”. QuickPicks are my attempt at getting all of the music that’s sent to me that I like (or just music I like but have no words for because it’s so awesome), out into the dubya dots. Any time I get sent music that I like I “star” it in [...]

TweetShare Buy the album on Amazon – Vinyl | MP3 | CD Sweden has quite the reputation for producing outstanding electronic acts, among them Lykke Li, The Knife and, for the purposes of this review, Little Dragon. Little Dragon was formed in 1996 by Swedish-Japanese vocalist Yukimi Nagano and three high school friends. Since then, [...]

TweetShare Brazilian Money, a band that we’ve featured before who have a new and mightily focussed 6-track EP out, turned me on to Little Jungles, and I’m sure glad they did: “Winter Was Warmer”, an impossibly delicious slice of shoegaze that’s drenched in early nineties influences, has instantly become one of my favourite tracks of [...]
TweetShare Having been released at the start of the year there aren’t many people talking about Papercuts‘ latest album “Fading Parade” as we approach the end of the Summer, however the exact opposite should be happening. The album is made for Summer with its hazy vocals, light and breezy guitar work and the overall sense [...]
