Julia Holter could be the white knight for experimental pop/drone. Her attention-to-detail approach paired with gorgeous sonic structure on “Ekstasis” will be remembered as the hits and misses in the genre come in for another few years.
Check out The Knock’s covering M83′s “Midnight City”.
Colour Coding’s “Perfect” is my candidate for best 2012 summer anthem. If your weather has been anything like mine, most days you could put this on and it wouldn’t even seem out of place. Otherwise, just put “Perfect” in your music folder and sit on it for a few months. You will look like a musical genius at your next party.
As formal introductions go, “Strange Weekend” is a pretty good one. In a flooded genre it stands out as an example of how far bedroom pop can reach.
“Hurry Up We’re Dreamin” is a legitimately epic album that sees M83 just getting bigger and better.
YOUAREHERE’s debut “As When The Fall Leaves Trees” display their spatial songs that let you drift to their wallpaper quality, while somehow staying true to their inherent danceability. They’ve got a Mogwai post-rock infinity, downtempo grooves that Board of Canada might be proud of and everything you loved about early M83.
With a pop hook and lilting crescendo lurking around every corner, Sparkadia offers a mixed bag of surprises in the guise of gorgeously executed, dreamy power pop.

Listen to Girls‘ new song “Lawrence” below. This year has seen some stellar album releases by already-established artists, most notably by St. Vincent (a personal favourite of mine), Feist, M83, Bon Iver, and of course San Francisco’s Girls with “Father, Son, Holy Ghost”. A couple of days ago Girls announced that they’d be releasing a one-off [...]
I’ve misplaced my leg-warmers. Normally this wouln’t really bother me – quite the opposite – but I feel naked listening to Big Black Delta without them. The solo side-project of Los Angeles-based Mellowdrone’s founding member, Jonathan Bates; BBD knocks out dark, retro electronica that suggests more rock bassists ought to take time off from their day-jobs. [...]
Watch the new video for M83‘s song “Midnight City” below, taken from the album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming”. For some stupid reason the EMI blocked the Vimeo and YouTube videos in the U.S., so there’s a DailyMotion link below that should work for everyone.
Listen to M83‘s new album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” below. One of the most anticipated albums of the year, if not the decade (I know, we’re only in the second year of the decade, but still), is being released next week on October 18th. Previous cuts from the album “Intro” and “Midnight City”,have given us [...]
When I contacted Canopies about featuring them on this site I asked them for what they might consider some of their influences; they divided these into two groups: musical and non-musical. The former showed a musically well-versed and (culturally) diverse band with the likes of Brian Eno, the Davids (Bowie and Byrne), Yellow Magic Orchestra [...]
Wait? Didn’t Listen Before You Buy already put up a Notorious B.I.G. mashup? This may be your first thought when hearing this song. The answer is yes but that one was Wait What‘s mashup of The XX and the poppa (and yes it was awesome). In the last month I’ve downloaded seventeen M83 “Midnight City” [...]
If you’re at all like me then you’re probably fairly excited to listen to “Conatus”, the new album by Zola Jesus. In the last couple of months we’ve heard a fair few tracks from the album as well as a collaboration with M83 on the song “Intro”. Each song has slightly outdone the previous one [...]
