No need to beat around the bush with this one: “We Don’t Need” is an almightily good EP. It’s tempting to call Cheyenne Marie Mize promising because her career is so young, but that’s underselling it: this is a compelling record, equal parts fascinating experimentation and plain fun, and as exciting as Mize’s future will no doubt be, she deserves your attention right here, right now.

TweetShare Seattle tends to find something it’s good at and stick with it, musically speaking. We all know that Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden brought grunge rock to the forefront in the ’90s. In more recent years, the popularity of the alternative/folk/rock sounds of Death Cab For Cutie, Fleet Foxes and The Head And The [...]

TweetShare What is it about soul music that makes it feel so, well, complete? I always feel like I’m getting the whole package when I listen to someone like Stevie Wonder or any artist that could fall under Motown. Even if the songs are about the deepest of the blues, I tend to wear a [...]

TweetShare This post is a “QuickPick”. QuickPicks are my attempt at getting all of the music that’s sent to me that I like (or just music I like but have no words for because it’s so awesome!), out into the dubya dots, picked quickly. Less for you to read, more for you to hear. [...]

TweetShare Digits is the musical alter-ego of Toronto-based Alt Altman. Eagle-eyed readers will note that we recently featured Mr Altman in his capacity as one half of dreamy R&B duo Bad Passion, whose first EP should be arriving shortly. Listening to his solo output, it’s clear how much of an influence he’s had on their sound. [...]

TweetShare Neko Case debuted a new song, “Calling Cards” in Charlottesville, VA. I’ve always been in love with Neko Case’s voice, and since her last album “Middle Cyclone,” we haven’t hear that much in new material. I’m pleased to hear “Calling Cards” is classic Neko, and honestly, Neko is the only one that can sing “Blah, blah, [...]

TweetShare I feel I should preface this review by admitting that I’ve been a Kanye West fan ever since I heard “Jesus Walks”, and while I don’t admire Jay-Z‘s musical prowess quite as much as that of his protege, I have mad respect for him as a rap legend. Both of them brought their A-game to the table [...]

TweetShare This will be big. Mainly because of those two heavyweights of Jay-Z and Kanye West at the epicentre of the album, but also because it’ll promise to throw up some really great songs and after the first track we heard from it (“H.A.M”) garnered a lukewarm reception, the second track “Otis” got a much [...]

TweetShare Are you wondering if we’ve just stepped into 1972? Are you about to pull out your bell bottoms, fringe jackets and grow your hair out in a true afro? Stop. While the music was pretty amazing in the 1970′s, the fashion trends are better left in the past. Michael Kiwanuka has a beautiful voice. [...]

TweetShare Curiosity killed the cat and never being one to shy away from death-defying acts, I’m curious as hell as to why this new jj track featuring Ne-Yo is censored. Anybody know? It’s whatevs. Released as the penultimate single on Adult Swim’s Singles Series Ne-Yo sent this track to Adult Swim who subsequently sent it [...]
