This lovely, lilting gem of an album crescendos and crashes like a wave upon the shore, largely thanks to Alaina Moore’s delightful voice and Patrick Riley’s creation of a 60s/70s vintage pop vibe.
There’s some good soul and blues to be had here, and Brittany Howard’s voice is as stunning as you’d expect, but for all of its climaxes, “Boys & Girls” could be a much more muscular album. Still, Alabama Shakes have big things in store for them.
Listening to Alta Mira is a true what-you-hear-is-what-you-get experience. There’s no studio trickery, no inorganic sounds, nothing excessively flashy. What there is is straight up indie pop/rock, and of a very high caliber.

“I Found You” from Alabama Shakes is more than just some 60′s soul/50′s blues throwback, it’s more like Ruth Brown meets James Brown with a slight hint of The Starlighters mixed in and there’s a difference between the two. It’s one thing to be able to throw bands like that in as references, it’s another [...]
