The Flaming Lips team up with New Fumes for for “Girl, You’re So Weird”, a track from their Record Store Day release.
Number 2 of our ’02 Flashbacks. When the most substantial criticism of an album is that its philosophical commentary isn’t as good as Heidegger’s, you can assume that there is a hell of a lot right with everything else. “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots” might not go down as The Flaming Lips’ finest work, but by almost every other metric it’s an absolute triumph.
With a pop hook and lilting crescendo lurking around every corner, Sparkadia offers a mixed bag of surprises in the guise of gorgeously executed, dreamy power pop.
If had to narrow this Intro down to just one phrase, it would be this: “Sunbears! sound a lot like The Flaming Lips.”
Listen to “Make It Sound”, the new album by The Sea Of Cortez below. A little over a year ago this young band appeared on my radar who impressed me enough to write an Introduction piece about them. The five piece from LA at that time only had a couple of songs to their name but now, [...]
The Flaming Lips have really been branching out after their last album, “Embryonic”, collaborating with artists like Neon Indian and Prefuse 73. It’s all been very exciting to Flaming Lips fans such as myself. In fact, it’s hard to think of anything The Flaming Lips have been involved with that wasn’t exciting and/or slightly alarming, [...]

In those days Cabic was [...]

Chances are you have already heard some of Wolf Gang’s songs and didn’t even realize it. Wolf Gang’s self-titled EP has only been out for a few months, but it has caught on fire fast and the songs are just as intoxicating and hot. Wolf Gang, not actually a “gang,” is a solo act that [...]
No group can call itself something like A Lull and keep an entirely straight face. You’d expect the name to be deceptive and you’d be right. “Confetti”, the name of their debut album released last week, does a much better job of capturing what this Chicago quintet is all about: these guys write colourful tracks, [...]
If you handed me a map and told me to point to Finland I could do that with relative ease (thanks to a pricey liberal arts education), it’s that little country that looks sort of like a demonic claw that borders Sweden and Russia. Okay, first off what the hell does this have to do [...]
When I listened to the first few bars of “Steve-O Don’t Move To San Francisco” by Andy Maher Candy Bar, I was almost about to hit the stop button immediately. Call me a heathen, but strummed acoustic guitars just immediately turn me off, I don’t know why. I’m so glad I chose to delay [...]
