Regardless of the overall opinion of Phoenix‘s fifth studio album, Bankrupt! (mine is that it’s great), most seemed to agree that one of the highlights, aside from “Entertainment”, is “Trying To Be Cool”, a mid-tempo jam about, well, trying to be cool. The groove is absolutely infectious, and the chorus (especially that synth hook) is one of the best moments on the album.
For the video for the song the French band have decided to capitalize on the idea behind the song and make a video that’s just scene after scene of them trying to act as cool as possible. Of course, Thomas Mars & co are smart guys, and they know very well that not much of what they’re actually doing is cool, though it does look like a lot of fun. Still, it’s incredibly entertaining to watch the band perform as they go through costume changes, and scene changes, each more ridiculous than the next.
As has been the case with their live performances for this “live” take they’ve included the end of “Drakkar Noir”, another one of the album’s finest moments.
And even if the album doesn’t end up on many year-end lists, the Parisians must know that they’ve made two of the most entertaining videos of the year.
